UK Spouse visa requirements

Requirements

  1. The sponsor (partner in the UK) must be British or have a settled status (indefinite leave).
  2. The parties (sponsor and applicant) must intend to live together permanently together.
  3. The parties must be able to show that they earn a minimum of £18600 per year before tax.
  4. Evidence the applicant will be properly accommodated in UK.
  5. Evidence that the relationship is genuine.
  6. The applicant must show that they meet the English requirement either by writing EILTS level A1 or acquiring a NARIC English proficiency certificate if they hold a bachelor degree.
  7. Applicant must complete a TB test if applicable.
  8. Parties must have met in person.
Documents to support
  • Your passport scan or indefinite leave
  • Proof of income, £18600 earnings per year
  • Tenancy agreement
  • TB test certificate
  • EILTS certificate
  • Marriage certificate or proof of at least 2 years of cohabitation
  • Proof of communication, meetings etc
  • Personal statement of your relationship to support your application.
  • Both parties must include details of anyone you previously married or had children with. Include evidence of marriages ending, for example a divorce certificate.
  • Children birth certificates if applicable
Proof of income
  1. bank statements showing you or your partner’s income
  2. 6 months of payslips
A letter from an employer, dated and on headed paper
The employer’s letter should confirm:
  • you or your partner are employed there
  • the job title or position you or your partner hold
  • how long you or your partner have worked there
  • the type of contract (for example, permanent, fixed term)
  • what you or your partner earn before tax and National Insurance
  • how long you or your partner have been paid your current salary
  • the payslips are genuine

If one or both of the parties are self employed or are relying on savings, their income is calculated accordingly.

Visa Costs

Partner or child visa application fees is £1,523 outside UK and £1048 inside the UK.

Healthcare surcharge

For each adult (18 or older) it costs:

  • £1,560 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £1,872 if you’re staying for 2 years and 9 months
  • £3,120 if you’re staying for 5 years

For each child (under 18), it costs:

  • £1,175 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £1,410 if you’re staying for 2 years and 9 months
  • £2,350 if you’re staying for 5 years

How long it takes

If you apply outside the UK a decision will usually be made within 24 weeks.

If you apply in the UK a decision will usually be made within 8 weeks of your application date if you use the standard service.
